When Starting a Data Entry Project Keep the Following in Mind

            Outsourcing has a historically “bad” connotation due to the concept that the practice eliminates domestic jobs. This concept relies on the misconception that outsourcing and offshoring are exactly the same practice, which is just not true. Since the data entry service provider and data processing service community is a hot bed for both outsourcing and offshoring; we are going to spend some time on these concepts.

Outsourcing is defined as “the contracting or subcontracting of noncore activities to free up cash, personnel, time and facilities…”( Source). Offshoring is defined as “the moving of various operations to another county for reasons such as lower labor costs or more favorable economic conditions…” (Source).

         Now outsourcing can definitely be used in a situation where the processing are being moved to another country i.e. “offshoring” but this does not have to be the case. The local veterinarian in NJ moving their accounts payable processes to the company down the road is still outsourcing; and maybe vital to the success of the local business. Now the accounts payable outsourcer may be using offshore resources to provide the services to the local NJ company but this does not mean jobs were completely eliminated. Look at this situation from the viewpoint of the local business owner. The business owner just saved time, money and obtained resources which can be used to ultimately grow the business, in the end creating more opportunity. The immediate result might be the “lose” of a job by not having to hire an accountant, but the Veterinarian may now have the resources to hire an individual into another position. Also, even if the accounts payable outsourcer is offshoring some aspects of the work they still need personnel in the US to help with operations.
